El Salvador

El Salvador stamps available at Io Collezionista. El Salvador is the smallest in area but most populous nation of Central America, with about 6.5 million inhabitants. In the pre Columbian age it was part of the Maya Empire, while from the 16th century it fell under the rule of the conquistadors of Pedro de Alvarado, who dedicated his success to Jesus Christ the Saviour: the name Provincia De Nuestro Senor Jesus Cristo, El Salvador Del Mundo was later shortened to El Salvador. In the modern age El Salvador was the theatre of a long civil war, begun in 1979 with a coup, between the central government, controlled by the military, and the FMLN, the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, which ended only in 1992 with an agreement signed in Mexico City.
