Samoa
Samoa stamps, available worldwide at Io Collezionista. Samoa, called Western Samoa until 1997, is an island state of Oceania that declared its independence from New Zealand in 1962. The total population, about 195,000, is settled largely on the main island of Upolu. The first visitors to the area were peoples from South East Asia in 2000 BC, while western influence arrived fairly late compared with other parts of the world, between the 18th and 19th centuries. Foreign explorers were so struck by the seafaring skill of the local peoples that they chose to call Samoa, including the eastern islands, American Samoa from 1911, the Navigator Islands, a name that fell out of use in the 20th century.
