Venezuela stamps, available worldwide at Io Collezionista. In 2019 Venezuela reached the centre of the international political agenda because of the governmental crisis that struck the country early that year. The Venezuelan National Assembly, the opposition controlled parliament, having repeatedly contested the outcome of the 2018 presidential election that returned Nicolas Maduro to power, elected a new interim president, Juan Guaido. Maduro, backed by the National Constituent Assembly and supported by Russia, maintained that the unrest was nothing but a coup engineered by the United States, eager to take hold of the country's vast oil resources, the largest known reserve. The origin of that crisis probably lies in 2010 when, under the presidency of Chavez, unmistakable signs of mistaken social and economic policies appeared: hyperinflation, economic recession and shortages of basic foodstuffs.
