ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar stamps for sale at Io Collezionista. Zanzibar is a semi autonomous region of Tanzania. The union with Tanganyika, the name mainland Tanzania used before 1964, took place in the first half of the 1960s, shortly after the revolution of January 1964 that deposed the sultan and the government elected in 1963. The region takes in a series of smaller islands and two main ones, Unguja and Pemba, which together make up the Zanzibar archipelago. The name probably comes from the Persian zanj, a term used for Black people; an alternative theory points instead to the Arabic word zanjabil, ginger. The capital, Stone Town, can claim a place for its historic centre on the UNESCO world heritage list.
