ITALY 1946
Italian Republic stamps from 1946, available worldwide at Io Collezionista. On 2 and 3 June 1946 the Italian people went to the polls to decide what the institutional shape of the country should be. Thanks to the adoption of universal suffrage in January 1945, women were able to take part in a political vote for the first time in the nation's history. The final results were proclaimed by the Court of Cassation on 10 June and saw the republican side prevail over the monarchist one, by 54.3% to 45.7%. Turnout stood at 89.08% of those entitled to vote, some 28 million people.
