ITALY 1947

Italian Republic stamps from 1947, for sale at Io Collezionista. One of the most significant events of the year was without doubt the massacre at Portella della Ginestra in 1947, in the municipality of Piana degli Albanesi. For the workers' holiday on 1 May, about 2000 people gathered in the mountain locality for the celebrations. The criminal band of Salvatore Giuliano, later recognised as the perpetrator of the massacre, the first of republican Italy, opened fire on the crowd without warning, killing 11 people outright, with another 3 dying in the days that followed, and gravely wounding a great many more. The attack was the first of a long series directed at various offices of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), with assorted intimidation by gunfire and explosive devices. In the main Stamps category you can browse other subcategories devoted to particular historical periods, such as Italian States Stamps and Italian Colonies Stamps.
