ITALY 1987

Italian Republic stamps from 1987, available online at Io Collezionista. In the summer of 1987, the year to which these Italian Republic stamps refer, the Valtellina was struck by a series of extraordinary weather events that caused heavy damage and many deaths. The most disastrous were the flooding of the river Adda and the Val Pola landslide. When the emergency ended the toll stood at 53 dead, more than 200 injured, thousands of people displaced and 4000 billion lire of damage. Law no. 102 of 1990, better known as the Valtellina Law, allocated 2400 billion over six years to secure and monitor the areas of the municipality of Sondrio and its neighbours.
