The affair would be reported by the media as the Abu Omar case and would provoke strong controversy at home and abroad, because the CIA operation on foreign soil was unlawful. Omar was being watched by the Italian authorities over alleged links to Islamic terrorism, but his kidnapping effectively brought the investigation to a halt.
