East Germany, or the Deutsche Demokratische Republik, hence the abbreviation DDR, was born on 7 October 1949 in the sector of Berlin controlled by the Red Army, and formally ceased to exist on 3 October 1990, the day formal reunification with West Germany was completed and the modern German state came into being.
