Luxembourg
Luxembourg stamps, for sale at Io Collezionista. An important financial centre and the last grand duchy in existence, Luxembourg is among the founders of the UN and of the European Union, and its capital hosts several EU agencies and institutions, including a good part of the administrative apparatus underpinning the European Parliament. Luxembourg is also home to Schengen, the small town where the treaty on free movement within the EU was signed in 1995. According to the historical record, the origins of the State go back to 963 AD, the year in which Count Siegfried of Luxembourg began building his castle on the ruins of a Roman fort, or castellum. Over the following centuries the outpost would become a fortress city in its own right.
